EAT FOR PEACE

This November, we’re launching EAT FOR PEACE – a day when different people can eat together in the comfort of a home, talk, build friendship, and start to build stronger communities. The idea might seem strange, but it is this kind of small, low-key initiative that can transform communities. A powerful but little-known story is of the eight South Africans (four black, four white) who sat down and ate together in the early 1980s, then a month later split and hosted two more meals (again, with 8 people – 4 black, 4 white). Then a month later there were four meals, then eight, and so on – each time including new people in this social movement. This initiative ran throughout the 1980s and 90s, and helped establish the strong social networks out of which a new South Africa could emerge after Apartheid.

The truth is: when different people choose to embrace one another, share life together, and build friendships, communities are changed and strengthened. And we urgently need these strong, resilient communities to withstand the massive economic crisis facing us now.

Join us this autumn, on Sunday 9th November, for the first EAT FOR PEACE. We plan to then roll out the initiative again in 2009… and beyond! Please sign up here, stating your interest in EAT FOR PEACE, and we’ll be in touch with more info.
